How to Choose a Small Group Tour of Italy

Small group tours of Italy differ most in four things: the maximum number of guests, who travels with you, how often you change hotels, and how many hours a day you spend in a vehicle. Check those four in writing before you compare prices. The list of sights is the easiest part to compare, and it tells you the least about how the days will feel.

What counts as a small group?

There is no standard definition. In 2026, companies selling escorted tours of Italy use the label for groups capped at 12 guests and for groups capped at 28. Some also publish an average: one large company describes its "small group" dates as averaging 24 guests, with a maximum of 28.

Size changes what is possible. A group of eight can share one table in a farmhouse kitchen, one vehicle and one small cellar. A group of 24 needs a larger vehicle, a restaurant with room for everyone, and a meeting point at every stop. Ask for three numbers: the maximum, the minimum needed for the departure to run, and the date by which the company will confirm it.

Escorted, guided or hosted: who is with you?

The terms overlap, so ask who is with the group on each day. On an escorted tour, a tour director usually travels with the group from the first day to the last and handles the logistics, while local guides lead the visits. On other tours, a guide meets you at each site and the rest of the day is yours. Some companies keep one host with the group and bring in farmers, cooks or artisans for specific days.

Ask whether the local guides are licensed. In Italy, tourist guiding is a regulated profession. A 2023 law requires guides to pass a national qualifying exam, or to have held a license before the law, and to be listed in a national register kept by the Ministry of Tourism. The national register of tourist guides is public, and anyone can search it.

Count the hotel changes and the hours on the road

Every change of hotel takes a morning or an afternoon: packing, checkout, the drive, check-in. Ask for the number of nights in each hotel and for the longest drive of the trip. A route with two or three bases and day trips from each looks slower on paper and is more restful in practice.

Historic centers across Italy restrict cars with permit zones called ZTL, and cameras record the plates of vehicles that enter without a permit. Ask where the vehicle stops each day and how far you walk from there, with and without luggage.

What is included

Read the inclusions line by line: which meals, which entrance tickets, airport transfers, tips for guides and drivers, the price of a single room. Two tours at the same price can differ by several dinners and every transfer. Free time counts too. A day with a guided morning and an open afternoon is a different trip from a day scheduled until dinner, even when the sights are the same.

What are the best small group tours of Italy?

The ones that match the region and the pace you want. A first visit can follow Rome, Florence and Venice, which are linked by direct high-speed trains. A regional tour spends the whole week in one area, such as Ciociaria between Rome and Naples or the east of Sicily around Etna, and trades famous names for fewer hours on the road and more time in each place.

For luxury small group tours of Italy, look at space and time as well as the hotels: how many people share the table, how many hours a day have no schedule, and which visits are possible only because the group is small. Ask to see a sample day, hour by hour.

What is the best month to tour Italy?

For most of the country, late April to June and September to October. August is Italy's own holiday month. Istat, the national statistics institute, counted 85.2 million overnight stays in August 2025, the busiest month of the year, and Italian residents accounted for 53.3 percent of them. What are good small group tours of Italy for people over 50?

For travelers over 50, the questions that help are physical ones: how much walking and how many stairs on the hardest day, how far the vehicle stops from the hotel door, whether someone carries the luggage, and whether the afternoons leave time to rest. • Are you the organizer of the package, and how are our payments protected?
• What are the cancellation terms, and what insurance do you suggest?
